About the artist:
Egon Schiele (1890-1918)
Egon Schiele is an Austrian painter and a student of the famous Symbolist artist Gustav Klimt, known for creating erotic and deeply psychological portraits, focusing on sex, death, and discovery. In his many self-portraits, Schiele is typically nude and staring directly towards the viewer. Before he was struck down by Spanish flu at only 28 years of age, Schiele had created around three hundred paintings and thousand drawings over the course of ten years.
Schiele had a great love for women: he once claimed that he had 180 women pass through his studio in just 8 months. Schiele’s female figures present themselves unabashedly towards the viewer, nothing like the academic nude. Many of his female nudes appear in an unarticulated space, their bodies placed on a blank canvas with no scenic context.
