Usually worn in multiples, cast gold rings “mpƐtea” have featured prominently in Akan (Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire) chiefly regalia since the 16th century. The rings display wealth and amplify chiefly gestures. The spoke motif represents an insect cocoon alluding to the proverb “it is a puzzle to know how the caterpillar entered its cocoon, did it build it before entering it or did it build it around itself?” This proverb refers to the great power of the chief, the deeper meaning to the proverb being “appearances can be deceiving.
