Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 – 1901)
French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a man of aristocratic background, was a constant presence in the popular cafés, concert halls, and brothels of Montmartre in Paris. He was both a keen spectator and an active participant, designing posters, theater programs, scenery, and costumes for a number of theaters and stage productions. He died at the age of 36, as a result of heavy alcohol consumption and various diseases.
Maxime Dethomas, 1896
Maxime Dethomas, painter and graphic artist, was a friend of Lautrec and one of his favoured companions on brother-crawls. His painting was strongly influenced by Lautrec, with whom he travelled to Normandy and Holland.
