Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 – 1901)
French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a man of aristocratic background, was a constant presence in the popular cafés, concert halls, and brothels of Montmartre in Paris. He was both a keen spectator and an active participant, designing posters, theater programs, scenery, and costumes for a number of theaters and stage productions. He died at the age of 36, as a result of heavy alcohol consumption and various diseases.

Toulouse-Lautrec created more than three hundred fifty prints and thirty posters, as well as lithographed theater programs and covers for books and sheet music, all of which brought his avant-garde visual language into a broad public arena.
